Simple Gift Boxes

from week of August 2, 1998

Design* and Instructions by Diana Trupiano

*I don't know who the original designer of these boxes is, since they've been around for over one hundred years. I drew up the patterns for these from some very old boxes I found at a flea market.

Supplies for both envelope and square box:

1 sheet cover stock (8 1/2" x 11"), or other heavy paper

Double Stick Tape

Round tipped stylus

Ruler or straight edge

Scissors

Assorted ribbons & trims (optional)

Assorted decorating items: Fused fabrics; silk ribbon roses; rubber stamps; colored pencils or pens; etc. (optional)

6" ribbon or lacing for a hanger (optional)

Instructions for envelope box:

  1. Lay pattern on wrong side of cover stock.

  2. Trace and cut out pattern.

  3. Using ruler and stylus, score (do not cut) where indicated on pattern. Fold and crease all score lines.

  4. Place double stick tape on right side of end fold.

  5. Fold, wrong sides together, and press edges together.

  6. Squeeze sides together slightly to bow.

  7. Fold crescent edges to center. This will close the ends, and hold the box shape.

  8. Fill and decorate as desired.

Instructions for square box:

  1. Lay pattern on wrong side of cover stock.

  2. Trace and cut out pattern.

  3. Using ruler and stylus, score (do not cut) where indicated on pattern. Fold and crease all score lines.

  4. Turn right side up. Decorate as desired.

  5. Connect sides 1 and 2 with double stick tape.

  6. Fold in flaps, and tuck in ends.

**If you wish to attach a hanger, glue or tape in place where indicated on pattern before closing box.

To print these patterns in correct size, you must have your display set to the Windows95 default setting of 96 ppi (pixels per inch).
